Aidrie city is located north of Calgary in Alberta Canada. It is situated in the Calgary-Edmonton Corridor and is a part of Calgary's Census Metropolitan Area. Airdrie's population has expanded significantly during the last several years due to the city's proximity to Calgary. Airdrie city is a member of the Calgary Regional Partnership and its boundaries are completely in the rural Rocky View County.
During 2006, the Canadian Census reported Airdrie to have inhabitants of 28,927 people. According to the municipal census of 2010, Airdrie's residents had grown to 39,822. Recently, there has been annexation of the land south of Airdrie. This coupled with the expansion of Calgary's city limits in the month of July the year 2007, have made the boundaries of the two cities in just a few kilometers of one another.
The city of Airdrie is located on the Queen Elizabeth II Highway, that is a roadway which links Alberta's two major cities: Edmonton and Calgary. This highway has helped make Airdrie a small transportation center. The Airdrie Airport does not offer regular scheduled flights even if it does serve the area. Calgary International Airport is the closest major airport.
In the year 1889, the city of Airdrie was initially established as a railway village all through the construction of the Edmonton and Calgary Railway, which was originally named for Airdrie, Scotland. Now, Airdrie city is an industrial centre with a lovely family community. Nose Creek is the main body of water and is the focal point for various city parks and green spaces including Nose Creek Park. The park hosts the popular Airdrie Festival of Lights through the Christmas season. The Airdrie Pro Rodeo and the Canada Day Parade are amongst different popular events. The Bert Church Live Theatre and the Nose Creek Valley Museum are amongst Airdrie city's major cultural locations.
There are numerous sporting franchises in the city of Airdrie. Major teams consist of the senior men's lacrosse team known as the Knights of Airdrie. This lacrosse team is a part of the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League. Team Airdrie is a Junior C level hockey team which competes in the Calgary Jr. C Hockey League. While the Airdrie Thunder is a Jr. B level hockey team who competes in the Heritage Junior B Hockey League.
