Lloydminster is a city in Alberta with a uniquely distinct geographical location as it straddles the provincial border between Saskatchewan and Alberta. The city has been incorporated as a single city that consists of a single municipal administration, as opposed to being a pair of twin cities situated on opposite sides of a border that just share the same name as found in the majority of these circumstances.
The petroleum industry is the major force within the local economy. Agriculture is another essential economic activity. There have been a lot of farmers within the vicinity who have been economically sustained by rent payments due to drilling of oil wells on their land. The Husky Lloydminster Refinery operates in the community as well.
Special provisions needed to be made about provincial taxation within city limits because of the city's bi-provincial status. There is no provincial income tax exceptions as this type of tax is solely based on the taxpayer's province of residence. Because Alberta has no provincial sales tax, the Saskatchewan side of the city is exempt from that provinces sales tax so as to stop companies located there being placed at a disadvantage relative to companies based in Alberta.
There are several distinct differences surrounding interprovincial costs that are reflected in housing taxes and auto insurance. For instance, on the Alberta side, a driver below the age of twenty five will pay about 2 to 3 times the standard amount required of a driver from Saskatchewan in the same age bracket and sex.
