How to Safely Handle Loads
Do not raise or lower the fork while the lift truck is moving. A load must not extend higher than the backrest because of the risk of the load sliding back in the direction of the operator. Inspect for overhead obstructions and ensure there is adequate clearance before raising a load. Stay away from overhead power lines. When the load is raised straight up, tilt it back slightly.
When the load is lifted the lift truck would be less stable. Make certain that no pedestrians cross beneath the elevated fork. The operator should not leave the lift truck when the load is raised.
While handling pallets, forks must be level and high enough to go into the pallet and extend all the way under the load. The width of the forks should provide equal weight distribution.
Before unloading or loading the truck, chock the wheels and set the brakes. Floors need to be strong enough to support the weight of the load and the forklift combined. Fixed jacks could be installed in order to support a semi-trailer which is not coupled to a tractor. The entrance door height must clear the forklift height by a minimum of 5 cm. Edges of ramps, docks and rail cars must be marked and avoid them.
If there is not proper ventilation into the forklift, do not stay in there for extended periods. The interior of the truck must have enough lighting and be obstruction free. Inspect the flooring of the forklift cab for holes. The installation of nonslip material on the floor would help prevent slipping. Clear whatever obstructions from docks and dockplates and ensure surfaces are not oily or wet.
Lift trucks must not be utilized to push or tow other forklifts.
